The starting point was the homeowner, a sportsman and a collector with a patriotic streak. Designer Alexandra Angle cleverly curated a home in Mendham, New Jersey that highlighted his passions while blowing away the cobwebs of history. The designer mixed this collector’s passion for history and nature with her modern flair.
Since the client is a huge collector of antique American furniture and folk art, the house and its woodsy setting are quite traditional. The old village of Mendham could be a transplant from New England. He’s also the divorced father of two teenage boys— an adventurous entrepreneur, sailor, fisherman, and sportsman who loves to travel. He’ll fly to England for a shooting party — the kind where guests know to dress for dinner after a day out in the field. But he also enjoys going home to cook for his kids and a bunch of friends.
Let’s start the tour with the powder room. To visually make the powder room larger, Angle used a wallpaper in her client’s Audubon prints. Their hues are enhanced by wainscoting in Farrow & Ball’s Arsenic and a window frame in the company’s Inchyra Blue.

Parikka’s design skills have no limits: she designed all the interiors herself with the same childlike wonder and practical functionality as her shoe designs. “There is nothing worse than a beautiful shoe that is impossible to wear or a unique home that makes every day more difficult,” she says.
Moving on to the bathroom, treat the master bathroom – especially when it’s ample – with the same decorative finess as the rest of the house. You can either opt for sterile white tile or relax in the graciousness of a gallery. Designer Alexandra Angle massed her client’s marine paintings, previously dispersed throughout the house, to salute his love of sailing
