Scandinavian Bathrooms: Simplicity, Utility and Comfort

If you’ve ever taken a look at Scandinavian homes, you’ll recognize the style: clean lines, lots of white and neutral colors, practical concepts that maximize space and function, and elegance highlighted by natural materials, cozy fabrics, and lots of light. In the bathroom, the Scandinavian style means bright spaces with natural wood tones, soft fabrics, multi-function spaces, and clean lines. This example by Matarozzi Pelsinger Builders, via Houzz, shows a quintessential Scandinavian bathroom, all the way to the wooden box tub. Decorative elements are limited to two bright yellow flowers on the vanity.
Dark Scandinavian Bathroom

The Scandinavian style can accommodate a darker mood, as in this bathroom by EM Architecture, via Dwell. The stacked subway tile makes the walls look wider, while the black floor hex tile and ceiling keep it all contained and comfortable. The wood is darker than most Scandinavian bathrooms, but it works well in this space.
Scandinavian Bathroom with Glass Tile

To make this bathroom more spacious, Lovejoy Designs chose a floating vanity. This opens up the area around the sink, and shows off the natural material of the wastebasket. It also highlights the beautiful glass tile on the wall. A single flowering branch and a minimal piece of floral art add the finishing touch.
Scandinavian Bathroom With a Touch of Blue

If you like minimal decor, the Scandinavian style will deliver. Add a touch of color, as in this bathroom by raumcouture, via Houzz, and you have a beautiful, spacious, yet fun space. Note how the glass shower wall defines the shower space yet doesn’t cut the bathroom at all. Everything seems part of the same harmonious whole, with as small a footprint as possible.

This farmhouse bathroom by Ruard Veltman Architecture features the natural wood and minimal profile of the Scandinavian style, with a touch of farmhouse via the trough sink vanity. A large mirror reflects natural light and enlarges the space.

Sweet Scandinavian Bathroom

Add a little sweetness to your Scandinavian bathroom with a subtle patterned tile, as in this design by Anton Gorbatenko. The tile extends to the vanity countertop, giving the space a sense of continuity and harmony. Light neutrals, lots of white, and a focus on geometrical shapes define this bathroom’s Scandinavian influence.
Marble-Tiled Scandinavian Bathroom

This small bathroom by designpad architecture, via Houzz, uses Scandinavian features to enhance function and keep things simple, along with all-over marble tile covering the walls and floor. This choice is bold, yet it works to give the space movement and visual interest. The desk-style vanity keeps things open and the functional medicine cabinet replaces much of the vanity countertop, saving horizontal space for a larger sink.
Scandinavian Bathroom with Teak Open Shelf Washstand
The massive teak open-shelved washstand dominates this bathroom by Paola Salinas. Retro wire baskets make storage easy, while lilac-grey towels add a little color. The sink and faucet keep lines clean and simple, and the mirror, framed with the same teak, adds light and visual space.
Super Minimal Scandinavian Bathroom

If your heart aches for minimal design, this bathroom by Line Architects definitely delivers. Clean, straight lines everywhere, and only two colors with a touch of green. Everything is kept as minimal as possible, whether it’s the hidden tank toilets or the shallow sinks. You barely notice the shelving along the back of the room.
White Scandinavian Bathroom with Black Backsplash
The contrast between black and white gives this bathroom by Amber Interiors, via Houzz, almost too much brightness. Pure white walls, floor and ceiling almost gleam, while a matte black backsplash wall focuses the attention on a gold-framed mirror and single light fixture. The skylight really makes the difference here, and gives this bathroom a lot of space and depth.
Night and Day Scandinavian Bathroom
Night or day? Choose your time with this dual bathroom by ZROBYM Architecture: one half black, one half white, both sides complemented with a pale blond wood. The tile on the white side seems randomly installed, giving the space a ton of unexpected visual interest.
